The “New” MacMini
March 2, 2006
I know it came out days ago, but I’m kinda in a dilemma about getting an Intel mac. First the iMac’s upped, then the extremely overpriced MacBook IMO, then this—the Mac Mini. I’m sorta satisfied with the price range: $599 and $899, but why would I buy a monitor from Apple? Aluminum is great, but more than the computer! I could use my TV, but then I’d have to get a wireless keyboard and mouse. Dell, for me, would be the way to go, especially with all those coupons I hear about on Engadget.
But should I go Intel?
Apple praises the Intel Macs to be 4x/5x faster. That’s great but how fast will Intel compatible applications come out? Shapeshifter isn’t Intel yet I hear, which has to be on my computer running for me to make the switch. Older PowerPC applications are abandoned and often don’t run under rosetta also. This is what tempts me to get an also amazing Powerbook.
The Mac Mini, however, is the perfect computer for me because its easy to get to the back of it
and looks minimal and nice, so it wouldn’t overcrowd my desk (if the chords are all over the place). That minimal design would also get me into the world of DVR and with the addition to Front Row, which also have to be on my mac, would complete my home entertainment experience.
I’m not in need of a new computer as of now, but if I do I am homefully getting a mac. Intel is an option, but I’m more likely to get a Power PC if I don’t here rapid improvement about Intel apps (like Logic!)
